21st century cartography: trucking requires mapping, nav and services

TomTom’s maps are among the most detailed in the world, and will prove indispensable to the connected trucker looking to reduce costs. By Xavier Boucherat

One of in-vehicle connectivity’s most widespread benefits has been improved mapping and navigation. Since forming in 1991, Dutch company TomTom has become a giant within this space. One milestone in particular came during 2004, when the company released the world’s first ever portable navigation device (PND). Since then, it has developed a number of solutions for various sectors of the automotive industry, including a commercial vehicle (CV) PND, and has been working with OEMs to integrate software into trucks rolling off the line.
