Webasto-Edscha, Webasto’s business unit for convertible roofs, develops and produces the soft top for the VW Beetle Convertible, which celebrated its world premiere at the Los Angeles Auto Show (November 30 to December 9, 2012). A highlight of the fully automatic soft top is the electric drive – developed by Webasto-Edscha – which is being used for the first time in the roof system of the Beetle Convertible.

More compact, lighter, quieter
The hood can be easily opened within 9.5 seconds by pressing a button while driving at a speed of up to 50 km/h. Unlike the previous model, which was equipped with a hydraulic drive, the movement of the soft top in the Beetle Convertible is controlled by an electric drive, which fits compactly into the roof system. Compared with traditional hydraulic drives, this results in a weight saving of more than 20 percent. Another advantage of the electric drive: the roof opens and closes very quietly. In addition, the three-layer, fully insulated acoustic top – with a three-piece seal design – optimizes the acoustic characteristics.

Upon opening, the top folds conventionally so that it settles very flat and compactly behind the rear seats. The heated glass rear window was integrated into the convertible top in such a manner that good all-round visibility is ensured. Regardless whether the roof is open or closed, the four-seater has a trunk capacity of 225 liters and features through-loading.

Sophisticated ambience for a high-quality driving experience
The soft top is available in black and beige. In both models, the headliner has an anthracite color, underlining the sophisticated ambiance of the fully lined interior.

The VW Beetle Convertible will be available on the European market starting spring 2013.
