The post-pandemic automotive industry

This Automotive World report considers how stakeholders can prepare for a post-pandemic automotive industry

In one form or another COVID-19 is here to stay. However, despite the recent Omicron wave more markets are hoping that 2022 will prove the most ‘normal’ year since the pandemic began. Should hope become reality, automotive’s stakeholders must be prepared to face the challenges offered by a post-pandemic industry.

Some challenges were present pre-2020. The impact of the UK’s decision to leave the EU, for instance, is still rippling out. Upcoming combustion engine sales bans are also looming, while development of connected, shared and autonomous products has also had to continue alongside the virus. However, other hurdles, such as the semiconductor shortage, are entirely new.

The pandemic has also pushed some trends further up the agenda. Sustainability and the climate crisis, fuelled by early air quality gains in urban centres and the COP26 conference, is now firmly in the public eye. E-commerce is also booming, while many announcements at CES 2022 has seen automakers double down on the connected automotive ecosystem.

Even if the world finally brings the virus under relative control in 2022, there is still plenty to keep automotive executives awake at night.
