  • Europe recorded second best month ever for the Nissan LEAF

  • Nissan LEAF remains the best-selling pure electric car in 2014 across the UK, Europe and the World

The 100% electric Nissan LEAF has proved itself once again to be the most popular pure electric vehicle in the UK, with sales breaking national and European records in September.

Figures released today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show the Nissan LEAF clocked up 851 sales during September, up 156% on the same month last year (332 sold), and topping March 2014 (the previous record month) when 630 were sold. This strong performance was not only a record for the UK, but represents the largest volume of Nissan LEAFs ever sold in one month in a European market*.

Sales of the British-built Nissan LEAF have already bettered the total number of units sold in 2013 (1,812 in total), with 2,969 cars sold so far this year, proving that the model’s practicality and low running costs, coupled with its unique driving experience, are keeping it ahead of the competition.

Dig deeper into today’s figures, and the data reveals that the Nissan LEAF sold more than double the volume of all other pure electric models combined in September**, while outperforming all other plug-ins in the UK market.

Alongside the impressive UK numbers, European Nissan LEAF performance continues to be strong, with September the second best total for a month since the car went on sale. The 1,986 cars sold took 2014 European sales past the 2013 total with three months of the year still to go.

Nissan’s Director of Electric Vehicles for Europe, Jean-Pierre Diernaz welcomed the announcement, commenting: “This is another milestone in the development of electric vehicle sales in Europe, which are continuing to grow all the time. We can see growth in some key markets as well as this UK record and the customer feedback on the vehicle is the best we have ever had on any Nissan product.”

He added: “We can see that the continued installation of quick chargers at Nissan dealers, motorway services and IKEA stores is helping to support this growth. The work put in by Ecotricity and in parallel the members of the EU founded TEN-T charging initiative means that almost 80% of the UK motorway network is covered by rapid chargers. This is clear proof that the electric vehicle market is developing strongly, which is great news for CO2 emission and urban air quality.”

The Sunderland built Nissan LEAF has now been joined in Nissan’s electric range by the Barcelona manufactured e-NV200 light commercial vehicle, which is set to revolutionise the sustainability and running costs of urban businesses.
