General Motors will unveil its new 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra pick-ups at a media event in Michigan on 13 December, ahead of their public debut at January’s North American International Auto Show (NAIAS).

A statement from GM describes the new Silverado’s “bold exterior design” as reflective of the model’s enhanced capabilities “while features such as jewel-like, projector beam headlamps showcase the careful attention given to every detail.” A teaser image (below) of the Silverado has been released.

The new Silverado is one of 13 new or significantly updated models Chevrolet plans to launch in 2013. Production of the new models will begin next year, though an exact launch date has not yet been specified.

The full-size pick-ups are key players in GM’s offering, but are starting to show their age. The current Silverado and Sierra were introduced in autumn 2006. In September, GM’s truck sales in the US fell 20%, with large pick-ups down 12%.GM’s full-sized pick-ups averaged a 116 days’ supply, compared to an average 82 days’ supply for all its vehicles. However, the OEM said it managed to whittle down the large pick-up inventory by about 8,600 units compared to August. Transaction prices in the segment were also up last month by US$2,300 per unit compared to a year ago, with the lowest incentive spending in the industry, according to J.D. Power PIN data.
