Japan reviews auto tax system to account for premium EVs

Despite their high price tag, Japan’s luxury EVs are taxed substantially less than their cheaper ICE counterparts. By Stewart Burnett

The Japanese government is reviewing its automobile tax system to address the growing popularity of premium electric vehicles (EVs) which benefit disproportionately from lower tax rates. In fiscal year 2024, 44 EV models priced at over JP¥10m (US$70,000) were available for purchase in Japan, up 80% from 2022.
