Various motor designs remain in the mix for EV market

There are a number of different motor designs that have pros and cons when used in electrified vehicles. By Michael Nash

OEMs and suppliers alike are examining various technologies for electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). Batteries, power electronics and motors are consistently under development, with different designs bringing different qualities to the table.

A number of electric motors are currently used in powertrains across the automotive industry, though the permanent magnetic motor is currently the most popular. However, Punch Powertrain believes that there is significant opportunity for switched reluctance motors.
