Trial and error ahead for automakers as they walk the path to mobility provider

The long-predicted slowdown in demand for private vehicle ownership means automakers must now lay the groundwork for success in the future mobility market. By Xavier Boucherat

Figures from around the world continue to show that younger generations do not have the same appetite for driving as their parents: in 2017, the US Federal Highway Administration put the percentage of 16-year-olds with driving licenses at 25.2%, down from 46.2% in 1983. The UK Department for Transport similarly reported a decline from nearly 50% in the early 1990s to 29% in 2014, for drivers between 17 and 20.
