HD maps ‘a key success’ factor for AVs

If autonomous vehicles will ultimately rely on their sensors, is there need for a map? Absolutely, according to a panel of experts. By Freddie Holmes

Vision sensors such as camera and LiDAR will allow autonomous vehicles (AVs) to observe all visible elements of the surrounding environment. However, they can only see so far, and cannot see around corners. High definition (HD) maps are being developed by several players today in order to extend the vision of an AV past the horizon, and help it to prepare for what is around the bend.

In essence, these maps will help an AV to locate itself on the road and get upfront information on factors that could affect the trip—like traffic and weather. While the technology remains in relative infancy, it is already advanced to a point where a vehicle’s position on the road can be calculated to within decimetres.
