COMMENT: Trucking surprised by Europe’s proposed GHG targets

Truck OEMs are concerned about the magnitude and speed with which the EU’s proposed GHG reductions need to be achieved, writes Oliver Dixon

In May, the European Commission announced its first ever proposed C02 targets for heavy duty trucks. There is nothing odd about this; numerous countries worldwide – not least the United States and Japan – have already set such targets and, in many regards, the EU is playing catch up. NOx and PM emissions have been reduced exponentially over the past two decades and, with the global focus now firmly upon reducing greenhouse gas (GHG), one might wonder what took the EU so long.
