Well before the Volkswagen diesel emissions ‘scandal’ came to light, environmental legislators had acknowledged a number of loopholes in the testing and certification processes involved in light vehicle type approval procedures.
Behind the scenes, on both sides of the Atlantic, work is continuing to tighten the regulatory framework. Updated legislation can be expected which will, for the first time, create a clearly-defined linkage between dynamometer-based emission measurements, under so-called laboratory conditions, and those recorded out on the road.
