New vehicle sales in Malaysia improved year-on-year in September, rising by 3.3%, according to figures published by the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA).
A total of 45,872 new vehicles were sold in the country last month, up from 44,407 units in September 2011, national news agency Bernama said, citing MAA data. Sales were, however, down month-on-month, by 11.5% compared with the 51,823 vehicles sold in August this year.
Out of the total number of vehicles sold in the country in September, 40,232 were passenger cars. This segment expanded compared with the 39,628 cars sold last September. The commercial vehicle segment improved as well, with sales rising from 4,779 units up to 5,640.
ASEAN’s new vehicle market – prospects to 2016, a report published by Automotive World, states that opportunities for non-domestic brands in Malaysia are improving, as the country lowers its protective tariffs.
However, the report does acknowledge that car ownership levels in the country are already reasonably high, a factor that does limit the Malaysian automotive market’s growth potential.
