Don’t expect electric trucks in India’s Silicon Valley any time soon

Previous attempts to limit HGV traffic and emissions in Bengaluru have failed, and electrification remains a long way out. By Xavier Boucherat

In recent years Bengaluru has pushed to be made ‘India’s second capital’. Its case is strong: not only is the city home to the nation’s science and technology hub, but it also is a major centre of Indian industry supplying the aerospace, electronics, garments and automotive sectors. The figures tell the story: it produces 60% of the country’s machine tools, 20% of its garments, and is the second highest producer of heavy electrical machinery. Rapid urbanisation and ongoing infrastructure development in the city also mean the construction industry is experiencing plenty of demand.
