The trend of powertrain electrification has blown hot and cold for decades. Recently, enthusiasm has shown signs of cooling. For example, those hoping to witness a flurry of new electric vehicle (EV) or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) launches at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) were disappointed. Instead, the emphasis was placed firmly on performance, luxury and SUVs – a far cry from the electrification offensive exemplified at the show in 2013.
