The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) today updated its annual list of “affordable, safe and reliable vehicles for teens” for the class of 2021. The following Nissan new and pre-owned models made this year’s honor roll:
Recommended New Vehicles for Teens (2021)
- 2021 Altima sedan
- 2021 Murano crossover
Only 2021 vehicles that come with vehicle-to-vehicle automatic emergency braking as standard equipment are included in the recommendations. Both the 2021 Altima and 2021 Murano were recently awarded the TOP SAFETY PICK+ (TSP+) rating from IIHS as well.
Recommended Used Vehicles for Teens Starting Under $20,000
- Rogue crossover: 2014, 2016 – 18, 2020 model years (“Best Choice”)
- Murano crossover: 2015 – 2020 model years (“Best Choice”)
To qualify for consideration on the pre-owned list, vehicles had to earn good ratings in the IIHS moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests. If rated by NHTSA, they earned 4 or 5 stars overall. All come with standard electronic stability control and have a curb weight greater than 2,750 pounds. In order to be considered a “Best Choice” the vehicle must also have received a “Good” or “Acceptable” rating in the IIHS driver-side small overlap front test.
According to IIHS2, “Although the lists are intended specifically for teen drivers, they can be a resource for anyone looking for a safe, reliable and affordable vehicle. The new vehicle list is especially useful for parents of younger children who might be buying a vehicle for their own use with an eye toward handing it down to a new driver in the future.”
Now in its third year since its total redesign, the 2021 Nissan Altima is offered in a choice of five well-equipped grade levels, front-wheel and Intelligent All-Wheel Drive, and a choice of two advanced engines – including the innovative 2.0-liter VC-Turbo inline 4-cylinder. The 2021 Nissan Altima has a starting MSRP3 of $24,450.
Since its introduction for the 2003 model year, the Nissan Murano has stood apart from the competition with its sculptural exterior, elegant interior and choice of front-wheel or all-wheel drive powertrains. For the 2021 model year, Nissan Safety Shield® 360 becomes standard on all four Murano grade levels. The 2021 Nissan Murano has a starting MSRP4of $32,810.
