US$4.5bn and 13 new models – Ford says “PHEVs are a real winner”

Automotive World speaks to Kevin Layden, Ford’s Director of Electrified Powertrain Engineering, about the US$4.5bn investment in electric vehicle solutions

How will the electric vehicle (EV) segment fare over the next five years? Many industry experts have voiced scepticism when considering predictions, although most are adamant that sales will continue to grow beyond 2020.

According to Kevin Layden, Director of Electrified Powertrain Engineering, Ford, the prospect of rising EV sales justifies an all out offensive in the segment. The OEM has shown its hand, and intends to spend US$4.5bn on electrified vehicle solutions by 2020. This includes the introduction of 13 new electrified vehicles into its product portfolio, the development of an all new Focus Electric, and significant R&D to reduce the costs of key components like batteries and electric motors.

Speaking exclusively to Automotive World, Layden discussed the key points of Ford’s electrification strategy and gave an insight into what the 13 new electrified vehicles will be like.
