Toyota joins Sumitomo to mass produce solid-state cathodes

Sumitomo will begin mass production from 2028, prioritising Toyota before moving toward broader market supply. By Stewart Burnett

Toyota and Sumitomo Metal Mining have agreed to jointly develop and mass produce cathode materials for next-generation solid-state batteries. The companies say their partnership is focused on scaling a newly-developed highly durable cathode material that promises improved longevity and performance when measured against typical lithium-ion cells.
