JLR powertrain tech to turn a corner on weight and efficiency, says OEM

The new JLR gasoline engine cuts fuel consumption by 15%, and its transmission technology improves fuel economy by 10%. By Michael Nash

Finding new ways to improve the efficiency of internal combustion engines (ICEs) is becoming increasingly challenging. In a recent Automotive Megatrends article, Dean Tomazic, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, FEV North America, said that the future development of ICEs would hinge on finding a combination of technologies that complement each other, rather than relying on one particular technology. “The diversification of technologies will be huge,” he predicted. “It’s a trend that will be visible across the vehicle, including the powertrain.”

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) recently unveiled its new four-cylinder Ingenium gasoline engine and a new automatic transmission called Transcend. Both include a variety of different technologies and approaches in order to achieve lower system weight and enhanced fuel economy.
