Byton opens studio in Shanghai, China’s vehicle design capital

The fledgling automaker, targeting production of its M-Byte model by end-of-year, has opened a design studio in Shanghai to master mobility. By Xavier Boucherat

New Energy Vehicle (NEV) is the catch-all term given to battery electric vehicles (EV) and plug-in hybrid elective vehicles (PHEV) in China. The world’s most populous state remains the biggest market for zero-emission cars, with 1.1 million sold in 2018. This represents 55% of global EV sales, as well as notable growth in China itself: in 2016, the figure was less than a third of that, at 351,000 units.
