Biogas could lessen the environmental impact of natural gas

LNG’s reduced CO2 content is good for fleets, but the LNG supply chain carries a significant environmental cost. Could biogas solve this? By Xavier Boucherat

Natural gas solutions, such as liquefied natural gas (LNG), are an increasingly attractive prospect for the trucking sector, particularly as markets such as the EU prepare to introduce CO2 limits for heavy-duty vehicles for the first time in their history. Hailed by Volvo as the world’s cleanest burning fossil fuel, it can achieve tank-to-wheel emissions reductions of up to 20% when compared to diesel.

But there remains the issue of how the fuel is produced, and its environmental impact along the supply chain.
