There are various terms used to describe the technology that allows a car to control itself, and for passenger cars at least, two key approaches. Whilst established vehicle manufacturers appear to be developing traditional vehicles with automated functionality, others such as Google are developing fully driverless vehicles. The former maintains the option for a driver to take control of the steering, acceleration and braking, but the latter offers no controls whatsoever.
