For all its disruptive potential, traditional layer-by-layer 3D printing techniques suffer from two major drawbacks that makes its use outside of prototyping largely untenable. Lengthy printing times push up the cost per unit to levels unacceptable in serial production, and the finished parts are often inconsistent in terms of surface quality and mechanical properties.
