3D printing advances at a rapid clip

Carbon’s tech is already causing a stir in automotive manufacturing, but designers will need a brand new mind-set to take full advantage of additive manufacturing. By Xavier Boucherat

For all its disruptive potential, traditional layer-by-layer 3D printing techniques suffer from two major drawbacks that makes its use outside of prototyping largely untenable. Lengthy printing times push up the cost per unit to levels unacceptable in serial production, and the finished parts are often inconsistent in terms of surface quality and mechanical properties.
