Semi-autonomous functions – safety aid or hindrance?

OEMs are racing to offer semi-autonomous technology, promoting its safety benefits. But could it have unwanted side effects?

Semi-autonomous vehicles are undeniably creating a buzz in the industry. From Tesla to Volvo Cars, and from Volvo Trucks to Daimler and its Freightliner Inspiration Truck, all OEMs are speeding up their technology offerings in this area – and the technology is being pushed on the grounds of safety. Indeed, at International CES 2015, TRW’s self-driving car technology was presented under the slogan, ‘Automated driving starts with safety’. But in the midst of the buzz, serious questions need be asked about how drivers will respond to these new driver assistance features.
