Supreme Court ruling shakes security on patent rights

The court has upheld the ruling that the Patent Trial and Appeal Board may construe claims in an issued patent according to their broadest reasonable interpretation, as opposed to their plain and ordinary meaning. By Megan Lampinen

Automotive patent protection just got that bit more complicated, following the Supreme Court ruling on Cuozzo Speed Technologies v Lee. The case centred on a patent relating to an in-car speed indicator and its method for displaying current speed against the speed limit, but what had the legal community as well as automotive industry players interested were the implications for patent interpretation.
