For the first time, Deutsche Post DHL Group, the world’s leading mail and logistics provider, is working with selected business customers in Germany’s Ruhr region to pilot a concept which reinvests earnings from its eco-friendly GOGREEN products and services directly into local environmental projects. As part of the pilot, the Group will increase investment in electric delivery vehicles in the region as customers in Duisburg and Essen increase their use of GOGREEN to ship their post and parcel items.

The goal of the initiative is to reduce local emissions and noise pollution, while driving continuous progress toward the Group’s environmental protection targets. Up until now, carbon emissions resulting from the transport of GOGREEN items have been offset through climate protection projects in developing countries. With this GoGreen Regional pilot project, the Group is now expanding its portfolio of climate-friendly shipping services to include a local component. At the same time, it gives business customers the chance to engage directly in environmental protection in the region. In this way, these customers can join in the effort to put sustainable mobility technologies out “on the street” and, at the same time, do their part to help electric mobility break through to economic viability.

“GoGreen Regional lends local impact to our larger environmental protection efforts,” explains Jürgen Gerdes, Board Member for the Post – eCommerce – Parcel division at Deutsche Post DHL Group. “We believe that this initiative is a sensible approach to combining economy and ecology – both regionally and locally – for the benefit of our customers. For this reason we plan to expand the project to include additional regions throughout Germany.”

Some 30 electric vehicles in Duisburg and Essen Over the next several months Deutsche Post DHL Group will deploy some 30 electric vehicles in Duisburg and Essen. In addition, GOGREEN business customers will receive individualized certificates to verify and document the emissions generated by the shipment of goods along their supply chains.

The GoGreen program is part of Deutsche Post DHL Group’s “Living Responsibility” strategy and integrated into its worldwide effort to foster sustainability. GoGreen focuses on avoiding, reducing and, if necessary, offsetting greenhouse gas emissions. Deutsche Post DHL Group was the first logistics company in the world to set a measurable climate protection goal: by the year 2020, the Group wants to improve the carbon efficiency of its own operations and those of its transport subcontractors by 30% as compared to 2007.

Over the last several years, a total of over 11 billion post and parcel items have been sent using the eco-friendly GOGREEN service, resulting in 650,000 tonnes of CO2 being offset on behalf of customers through external climate projection projects. This corresponds to reforesting approximately 1,300 hectares of land. Through the purchase of carbon credits, Deutsche Post DHL Group supports climate protection projects worldwide and ensures that emissions are offset on behalf of customers of climate-neutral GOGREEN products and services. To ensure quality results, these climate projects are selected based on the advantages they bring both to the environment and to local communities. In this way, GoGreen contributes not only to reducing emissions, but also to the economies and communities in developing countries. With GOGREEN products and services, and with the help of international climate-protection projects, Deutsche Post DHL Group will continue to offset emissions on behalf of its customers into the future.
