Constellium N.V. (NYSE and NYSE Euronext: CSTM) announced its support for the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative’s (ASI) new global sustainability standard for the aluminium industry.
Constellium joined ASI since its inception and contributed to expand its membership. Constellium has also participated actively in the development of the comprehensive new aluminium standard together with industry experts and key stakeholders under the leadership of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
“Constellium applauds this important step toward a more sustainable future for the aluminium industry and is proud of its contribution to the development of the ASI standard,” said Catherine Athènes, Constellium’s Sustainability Council Leader. “We believe this standard is truly groundbreaking as it brings together players across the entire aluminium value chain and defines a Chain of Custody, which directly links sustainable practices to the end products used by businesses and consumers.”
This new voluntary standard is the culmination of a year-long consultative dialogue involving industry leaders and civil society organizations. Once implemented, it will allow industry participants to certify the compliance of their environmental performance, social responsibility and governance practices to the standard’s principles and criteria through a third party certification system. The new standard will also enable the industry to better respond to growing customer and consumer demand for greater sustainability throughout the supply chain.
One of the standard’s principles is the material stewardship aspect, which is specific to the aluminium value chain considering the infinite recyclability of aluminium and the benefits of recycling. Constellium has a long-standing commitment to enhancing the sustainability of its operations and issued its first sustainability report in 2013 with key commitments and targets. “We see the new ASI standard as a natural extension of Constellium’s own sustainability efforts. By working together with our stakeholders, we can become more sustainable as an industry,” added Catherine Athènes.
