Virtual simulation won’t change full-scale crash tests, says IIHS

The rise of virtual simulation is changing many aspects of the automotive industry, but crash tests are expected to remain physical. By Michael Nash

Virtual simulation is having a huge impact on the automotive industry. OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers are using software from early stages in the design process of vehicles and components to save costs and improve efficiency, simulating a large variety of different scenarios and conditions.

While the opportunity for simulation is growing in vehicle and component design, some experts believe safety standards will remain wholly dependent on physical crash tests.
