US proposes 700 million gallons of renewable fuel for 2017

In 2005 the US Congress passed the renewable fuel standard (RFS) programme in the hope of reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs), increasing the nation’s reliance on renewable fuels and decreasing reliance on imported oil. The programme governs the amount of renewable fuels that are blended into gasoline and diesel. The first RFS, which is commonly referred to as RFS1, required four billion gallons of biofuel to be used in 2006. This figure rose to 7.5 billion gallons in 2012, and is expected to grow to 36 billion gallons in 2022.
