Kia has a US-focused design centre next to its American headquarters at Irvine, California; a permanent hot-weather testing facility 120 miles to the north in the Mojave desert; and a technology research centre at Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Yet it is not that long ago that the Kia name was confused by US customers with that of a Swedish company renowned for flat-pack furniture.
