Renault-Nissan success with MMC hinges not on size but synergies

The inclusion of Mitsubishi within the Renault-Nissan Alliance will make the combined operations one of the world’s three largest automotive groups, but sheer scale doesn't ensure success. By Megan Lampinen

A new behemoth emerges on the automotive landscape as Nissan completes its acquisition of a 34% equity stake in Mitsubishi Motors (MMC). Announced back in May this year in the wake of Mitsubishi's fuel economy scandal, the deal was only just now concluded. With the addition of MMC, the Renault-Nissan Alliance becomes a player in the 10 million unit-plus annual sales category, alongside such giants as Volkswagen Group, General Motors and Toyota.
