How Sweden is seeking leadership in future mobility

Josh Wickham talks to Drive Sweden, a government-run initiative seeking to promote inclusive multi-modal mobility solutions

As awareness builds around the notion of Mobility as a Service (MaaS), a growing number of cities, regions and countries are beginning to embrace the concept.

Drive Sweden is a three-year-old initiative run by the Swedish government that seeks to accelerate the process of transforming Sweden’s transportation industry into one that is increasingly service-oriented. The approach has so far emulated that of a number of other initiatives, notably regional neighbour Helsinki, where innovations in mobility have seen it become the home of the rapidly-evolving MaaS provider, MaaS Global.

Automotive World recently spoke to Drive Sweden’s Program Director, Jan Hellåker to learn more about the MaaS initiative and to understand the factors that motivated the creation of this project. Hellåker clarified that Drive Sweden is not interested in advocating restrictions to private car use. “Our aim is to design a new type of mobility that is more inclusive, using more combined transportation and more services.”
