GENIVI Alliance Open Automotive 13: event highlights

Automotive World's coverage of the GENIVI Alliance Open Automotive 13 in San Diego, October 2013

In October 2013, the GENIVI Alliance held its first Open Automotive event in San Diego; Automotive World was proud to be the exclusive media partner for this event, and we’ve assembled below our written and video coverage from Open Automotive ’13.

This was the first time that the GENIVI Alliance had opened its doors to non-members – but it probably won’t be the last: “The event was a huge success”, said GENIVI Treasurer, Joel Hoffmann, who plans to broaden the reach of GENIVI even further. “We need to get the voice of the whole automotive industry to participate and become much more open.”

GENIVI-logoThe next major event for the GENIVI Alliance will be ‘Collaborate or die’, the GENIVI-hosted panel discussion at International CES in Las Vegas in January 2014. As usual, GENIVI will host its annual GENIVI CES Demonstration Showcase and Network Reception at CES 2014, at the Trump Hotel. Follow this link for details, and keep coming back to AutomotiveWorld.com for updates on this event.

‘Collaborate or die’ for automotive IVI?
The automotive industry has seen an explosion in services offered in recent years, spurred on by brand collaborations in the medium of open source. How will these collaborations further develop to suit consumer needs, and rival the existing secrecy levels that remain within the automotive industry?

Cost, complexity and dinosaurs – all features of the automotive open OS battleground
Customers want seamless infotainment systems that provide exactly what they want, and that just work. At the centre of a successful infotainment system lies a successful operating system. The GENIVI Alliance’s preference, Linux, is becoming increasingly popular, but currently, proprietary software is in the lead

Smartphones driving demand for integrated infotainment
The growing number of smartphone users worldwide and the ease of use of such devices, thanks to their intuitiveness, has spawned the question of whether the user interface of an automotive infotainment system be designed differently from a smartphone interface

Connectivity futures – tapping mobile richness to bring OEM benefits
The automotive infotainment market has seen an explosion in the range of services offered over the past few years, spurred on by developments in connectivity. The question now is how will these systems evolve and what forces will determine their development
