Current by GE turns street lights into smart city data sources

Current by GE technology is providing data to feed apps on such areas as smart parking and traffic congestion mitigation. By Megan Lampinen

Lighting specialist Current by GE is repurposing traditional urban infrastructure to help create smart cities. Its CityIQ sensors are installed on street lights, where they can provide insights on vehicle and pedestrian movement. The information can assist city traffic engineers in their efforts to improve road safety. "We help cities build a true IoT strategy," explained Austin Ashe, General Manager of smart cities with Current. "Within IoT, the 'T' is the hardest part of that equation. For a city, what 'things' do you connect?"
