EU battery legislation could set global benchmark

The bloc’s proposed battery laws cover EV batteries, and could influence policy worldwide whilst handing EU manufacturers an advantage. By Xavier Boucherat

Sales of electric vehicles (EV) in Europe are in the ascendent: despite the disruption and uncertainty of COVID-19, sales of battery electric vehicles (EV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) saw annual growth of 137% in 2020, with 1.4 million new registrations. That figure is higher than in China, where sales of new energy vehicles—EVs and PHEVs—reached 1.34 million units. By 2030, the EU wants 30 million zero-emission vehicles on the road.
