Do autonomous vehicles really need high definition maps?

Highly detailed maps appear to be a crucial element of AV development, but researchers at MIT believe there is room to strip back to basics. By Betti Hunter

Maps are an essential component of autonomous vehicle (AV) development. They are, however, not the kind that human eyes are used to. AVs require maps that enable them to both navigate a journey and replicate the common sense that is inherent in human drivers—requiring the ability to not just stick to the planned route, but to reliably recognise key aspects of the road infrastructure itself.
