COVID-19 forces public transportation towards a digital future

Though many operators had already started the transition, COVID is expected to be the tipping point for public transit digitisation. By Jack Hunsley

As national lockdowns were implemented, public transport ridership crawled to a halt. According to Moovit, which tracks public transit usage in more than 100 cities worldwide, some locations saw ridership drop by as much as 90% from February to March. Though many countries are now easing movement restrictions, none of the 108 cities Moovit monitors has seen ridership recover to post-pandemic numbers yet.
