Driver retention has long been flagged as a priority area of trucking companies in the US, though recent data from the American Trucking Associations (ATA) indicates a slight improvement in the situation. The turnover rate at large truckload carriers actually fell 6 percentage points to 91% in the fourth quarter of 2013. However, that also marked the eighth consecutive quarter in which the rate remained above 90%.

For the whole of 2013, driver turnover averaged 96%. This was slightly short of the 98% average recorded in 2012 and far below the record 130% seen in 2005.
