During the period of Euro IV truck and bus emission regulations, Scania was one of the only two European manufacturers championing EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) as the preferred technology for controlling NOx (oxides of nitrogen) pollutants. The Swedish company argued that restricting NOx formation inside the engine, rather than neutralising it downstream, through a complex SCR (selective catalytic reduction) exhaust system installation, brought operational as well as initial cost benefits.
