Clean slate approach incorporates safety into design DNA

Mark Rosekind, Chief Safety Innovation Officer at Zoox, speaks to Megan Lampinen about the potential for new safety innovations in autonomous vehicle design

Should autonomous functionality be incorporated into existing vehicle designs, or do self-driving models demand a completely fresh approach? Opinions vary widely. Many of today's automakers and technology companies are working with existing designs and gradually introducing increasingly automated systems. Cadillac, for example, is rolling out a host of self-driving features through its SuperCruise system on the production CT6 model. Aptiv, meanwhile, is working with BMW 5 Series models on which it has installed radar and LiDAR units and numerous cameras. Similarly, Waymo has been sourcing Chrysler Pacificas and Jaguar I-Paces to test out its self-driving technology.
