Brazil’s drivers still deserve better, argue automotive safety advocates

Compared with other countries in Latin America, Brazil leads on automotive safety, but when compared with the US and Europe, a double standard still exists. By Xavier Boucherat

In developed markets, the influence of safety advocates such as those who work on the various New Car Assessment Programmes (NCAP) is undeniable. The pursuit of a five-star safety rating from a region's NCAP organisation is part of a wider set of pressures that has transformed automotive safety into a major selling point for consumers by accelerating the adoption of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). That said, outside of markets such as Europe, North America and Japan, the job of pressuring OEMs to ensure basic safety standards as laid down by bodies such as the United Nations continues.

Alejandro Furas is President of the Latin American NCAP, which performs tests for vehicles available in markets such as Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and more.
