Michael Nash looks at the possibility of using fleets of autonomous electric vehicles for ride-sharing

Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) projects growth of city populations around the world to be such that by 2050, over 70% of people will live in built-up areas. It also suggests that while urbanisation can offer opportunities, it brings with it serious challenges in terms of human health.

Transport is the source of two of these challenges, with an increased likelihood of road traffic collisions in congested areas as well as the emission of harmful pollutants like oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and particulate matter (PM). Ride-sharing could be part of the solution, as it helps to lower the number of vehicles on the roads.
