In January a total of 265,700 passenger cars were newly registered in Germany (-1 percent). Bernhard Mattes, President of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), stressed, “We are satisfied with this start to the year. January 2018 produced the month’s strongest result since 1999. Last month’s figure only narrowly failed to match that volume.” The proportion of diesels in January 2019 came to 34.5 percent – a little higher than in the same month last year (33.3 percent).
January’s domestic incoming orders enjoyed a marked year-on-year increase for the first time in quite a while. Customers in Germany ordered nearly 15 percent more passenger cars but in the last five months of the past year, orders arriving from Germany had consistently shown a year-on-year fall. In January orders arriving from other countries lost 5 percent.
The German passenger car manufacturers have started the year by building 367,300 new vehicles (-19 percent). The picture for exports looks similar, with 285,800 units supplied to customers all over the world in January (-20 percent). The decreases in production and exports were partly due to strike-related effects.
