US turns to negotiations, not battle, in quest for single fuel economy standard

California and the EPA could not be further apart from an ideological standpoint but some form of collaboration is essential to avoid two separate standards, writes Megan Lampinen

There's no call to battle just yet on the US fuel economy front as President Donald Trump takes a conciliatory stance in talks with auto industry representatives. A handful of top executives from the Big Three and Toyota met with the President, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Scott Pruitt on 11 May to discuss the standards for future light vehicle emissions.
