Once the darling of the trucking industry, the hype around platooning has undergone some cooling in recent months—but is it all doom and gloom? By Xavier Boucherat

It is easy to understand how the hype around platooning ballooned so quickly. The automotive industry’s journey to automation continues to prove a frustrating one, characterised with technical obstacles and the ongoing uncertainty around how to make high development costs stack up. With the possibility of platooning emerged a seemingly feasible application which, crucially, came with a business case. This fit a narrative which has gained traction: that on-highway commercial trucks would be the first vehicles to go autonomous.
