Toyota expands hybrid portfolio ‘to reach new customers’

The OEM has said that it is looking to pursue hybrid growth by entering new segments, writes Michael Nash

Toyota has been a pioneer in the HEV segment – it first launched the Prius in Japan during 1997, before bringing it to Europe in 2000. It has since launched 21 hybrid passenger vehicle models across the world under the Toyota brand, and nine under the Lexus brand.

The OEM recently announced that the cumulative figures for global sales of its hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) reached 9.014 million units, with the last million-unit milestone achieved in just nine months. This suggests that it has witnessed a considerable rise in sales for its HEVs recently. The Prius alone has surpassed three million sales globally.
