Rust never sleeps: could graphene prevent automotive steel corrosion?

Simon Duval Smith considers the potential for graphene in the automotive industry

A presenter at an aluminium conference once famously made a mock pitch for steel with the words, “I have an exciting material for sale. It is a bit heavier than aluminium, a lot tougher to work with, to form and to stamp, and it corrodes immediately on contact with the atmosphere. It is called steel, do you want to buy some?”

An apocryphal story, perhaps, but one that serves as a reminder of some of steel’s drawbacks.
