Push for standardised charging equipment in full flow

Standardised charging equipment for electric vehicles could go a long way in promoting uptake. By Michael Nash

Global interest in electric vehicles (EVs) is growing, and sales are on the rise too. China, France and the UK each saw EV sales double in 2015 compared to 2014, according to Nic Lutsey, Programme Director and US Co-Lead, International Clean Council on Transportation (ICCT).

“Perhaps society at large is turning over a new leaf on EVs,” he wrote in a recent blog post. “Consumers in many markets are increasingly turning to EVs… and while EV sales are up, the grid emissions keep getting lower.”

With sales on the rise, some experts are anxious about the availability and accessibility of charging infrastructure. One of the greatest challenges facing potential EV customers has been a lack of standardisation on charging systems, according to Claas Bracklo, Head of Electromobility at BMW.
