Lightweighting and safety – mutually beneficial, or a conflict of interests?

OEMs around the world are under pressure to develop vehicles that emit less CO2 and achieve higher fuel efficiency. In order to achieve this, many have embarked upon alternative material strategies, switching from metals that have long been used to craft vehicle bodies and chassis, to lighter alternatives such as aluminium and composites.
