Industry and government must align to meet automotive’s climate goals

Automakers urge better consumer clarity and more ambitious governance to accelerate transport decarbonisation. By Jack Hunsley

Transport decarbonisation will not be an easy task, and it is not yet clear how effectively the industry can reassure electric vehicle (EV) sceptics. For instance, a May 2021 study by UK energy industry regulator Ofgem found that while a quarter of consumers say they are planning to buy an EV in the next five years, high entry prices, range anxiety and the perceived lack of easily accessible charging infrastructure are deterring widespread interest.
