How electrification will transform vehicle manufacturing

As the industry edges ever closer to the electric vehicle tipping point, manufacturers will need to find smart new ways to keep production flexible and agile. By Xavier Boucherat

2017 was the first year that electrified vehicle sales exceeded a million units, with battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounting for around 800,000 units and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) accounting for around 400,000. According to McKinsey, the overall figure could increase more than four-fold by 2020, with 4.5 million units accounting for around 5% of the global light-vehicle market.
